How I Got Started

My journey into the ancient craft of leather-work began on the floor of a tiny apartment, the only space with room for tools and hides. Thankfully, my workshop is larger now (though tools are gaseous—they expand to fill all available space). The craft has always been a way to keep me sane, a real and tactile respite from a career largely characterized by sitting, filling out documents, and thinking until my head hurts.

I quickly fell in love with leather-work for its own sake. It is a craft with over five millennia of history, of which I am now a tiny part. The tools and methods used are delightfully simple; the way I make your project is essentially the same as it would have been made for at least the last several centuries.

Leather itself is wonderful, a kind gift from God and nature. It is a perfect gradient of fibers painstakingly treated for months to make a material that not only can be used for book bindings, saddles, wallets, holsters, upholstery, gloves, shoes, and jackets, but is still the best material for almost all of these applications. (I am biased, to be fair.)

Now, years later, I am grateful to be making bespoke leather goods for a small number of people every year, whose patronage allows me to continue working with this delightful and unique material, and bringing just a little timeless beauty into a fallen world.

Who I am

I am Lawrence, currently a student of the law, a husband and father, and a son of the Catholic Church and the American South. My time in the workshop is limited, but it has become an integral part of my life. I am grateful for each and every one of you that have worked with me (and read this far into my website).

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
